Keep Sаfе
Plасе thе сhiсk саgе indооrѕ in a gаrаgе, bаѕеmеnt оr ѕраrе room, ѕаfе from predators and соld drаftѕ. Inѕtruсt children to close the door behind them after leaving the chick room. Chickens should be locked in their coop at night and let out in the morning. This keeps them safe from predators.

Fresh Water
This muѕt bе available tо chickens and сhiсkѕ at аll times. After bringing new сhiсkѕ hоmе, gеntlу dip еасh bеаk intо the water dish. Chicken Roost????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Chicken roosting ladder

Roost
A roost is a place for your chickens to sleep in their coop.
The roost is usually made from tree branches or machined timber and should be 2 to 3 inches round or preferably flat so the chickens will have good grip and be comfortable while sleeping.
It is recommended to keep the roost at least 2 feet off the ground and at one level. If you have roosts at different levels chickens will fight for position and as chickens are social animals they prefer to huddle together for warmth and security.
It is instinct that chickens will roost (sleep) at the highest location available. When positioning the roost ensure they are higher then the nesting boxes so the chickens don’t sleep in the nesting boxes.
Chickens tend to poop a lot so plan your roost in a position that can be easily cleaned and away from nesting boxes and travel ways where you are walking to collect the eggs

Nesting Boxes??????????????????????????????????????????

Nesting boxes with a laying hen and some previously laid eggs

Nesting Boxes
A nesting box is where your chickens will lay their eggs. They come in all shapes and sizes and can be bought from your local pet supply outlet or can be home made. They can even be a square plastic bucket.Ensure your nesting boxes are large enough for your chickens to stand usually 12 x 12 x 12 inches would be a minimum so slightly bigger would be ideal.
Make sure your chickens can access the nesting boxes so in some cases a step or simple ladder at the front may be required.
You don’t want your chickens roosting on, in or over your nesting boxes as this will be very messy so your nesting boxes will be either open or if they are enclosed ensure the roof is on a slope to deter the chickens from roosting on top.
Chicken nesting boxes will require soft material for the chickens to lay their eggs. There are a variety of materials that can be used but the most common are pine wood shavings, straw and newspaper.
Astro turf is sometimes used as it is easily cleaned and can be reused over and over. No matter what material you use ensure it is replaced regularly so the chickens have a clean place to lay their eggs.
